In high school, we were taught to use double quotes. Once I started writing seriously I quickly learned that single quotes is now preferred here. Personally, I prefer single as it looks a bit tidier. (double for nested quotes, of course) Here in Oz, we tend to follow British conventions mostly.
Then, of course, we have Tim Winton, who considers himself above following rules or protocol. He simply eschews quotation marks altogether. I refuse to read his books; as do many others.
Yay! Correct! Here's your prize...a coupon code for 50% any ebook in my store. LRQTHXSDSJ is the code - can only be used once. http://payhip.com/pen2profit
Tuco - "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" If I'm watching TV and that movie is on, l'll switch to it regardless of how much time is left. That and "Shawshank Redemption."
Those ten points, are they in an account that can be added to - with more correct answers - and redeemed for gift cards?
So valuable! It amazes me when people do not understand this very simple set of rules. More amazing - people want to italicize (or place in quotations) anything that has a name. That would be a lovely piece in this series.
I may be an odd one. I had a scholarship to a college, but when I took the placement test to determine what classes I would be in, I failed the English test and was placed in what we called the "dumbell English class." I also had to take a foreign language, so I chose German. I really learned my English grammar in my German class. I am 87 now and am delinquent in grammar, and also, I am too wobbly to ride a bicycle.
I enjoyed your article! I am a grammar nerd and appreciated your points. I wholly embrace both the CMS/US standard (for my essays) and the Blue Book for legal citation (when I was in the legal field). Gracias, Maryan!
I get asked about quotation marks nearly every day 😁. I thought I'd write about them and then I found it's like the wild west--rules are loosey goosey--so I took that direction. It was fun to write.
I'm a bit miffed. You didn't mention Australia!
I'm embarrassed and profoundly apologetic. Tell me how you Aussies use quotes?

By the way, great article. I learned a few things.

Thanks, Maryan!
(making a note of MImi's story idea...)

Any time!
"Generally, though, they lean British..." Because they colonized us- the same way the Americans want to now...
Well, to be succinct, David, there are only one or two very dysfunctional Americans who want to colonize Canada. Such nonsense! Right?
This was a fun—and extremely helpful—romp through the use of quotation marks and italicized titles. Thank you, Maryan!
