I think that would absolutely depend upon the content—a pitch, a questions, a proposal, a fan letter—subject line will be decided by topic. And no, “You don’t know me…” nope. Once I wrote (as a heading for a pitch) “Your readers will not be able to resist this solution".” I sold the piece.
I’ve done this —and the secret is to be very careful about your tone and your message. Sometimes the emails aren’t hidden on purpose, they just are not published in social media, etc. The thought is to make a high-quality submission, not spam the editor or publisher. :)
How about an effective subject line. “You don’t know me but…” won’t work, but what might?

Any tricks for finding the name of the book cover designer who created a cover I like?
I'd find the author's website or the publisher's and ask someone listed as a media contact, I think.
These tips will help so many writers! Thank you, Maryan!
I'm wondering if this could backfire on writers as there's a reason they hide their email?

Thank you for the clarification.
