Long ago, I listened to the experts who told me I must… This resulted in wasted hours and money. The lesson was to keep it simple, which results in more writing.
Yessss! I've fallen into this trap and then had to figure out where monthly or yearly charges were coming from to stop them ~ The short list is great - and to the point :)
Good grief, I can’t tell you how often my partner and I had to audit our monthly subscriptions to various platforms. “It’s ONLY $10…$20…etc”. We killed almost all of them and didn’t miss them.
Thank you for your practical insights. I wholly agree with your short list of what we need. Having access to our mailing list is the main reason I am here instead of M. I just pray that aspect doesn’t change here.
Doing some research, I’m learning some concerning things about the possible direction of Substack. I’ve been here a year, but I think I may be old enough to move ahead, so I’m exploring options. I’ll write about my discoveries and my plans pretty soon. Yep, owning your list is important. Remember that you don’t own your list of followers or interested people, even here.
I hear you. It is always good to keep our eyes and ears open. Yes, I recognize that we only have access to our email list here and do not own them, lamentablemente. Gracias, amiga. ❤️
There are a million different tools popping up all the time, and the shiny object syndrome is at its very worst when you are starting out in a space that you have no idea about. It's not different in the digital writing space. Even a few years ago, it was already jam-packed with all sorts of things that are guaranteed to make you stand out...if you'd just start writing. 😁
Thanks for this reminder to focus on the writing. Good to have it as a mantra: “Permission to Ignore … Go write something. That’s where your gold is.”
We get caught up in the shiny objects—best not to lose our main focus, right?
Yes, it's those subscriptions.....I waste time trying to keep track of them. Everything has a subscription now.....everything. Thanks Maryan.

See, I told you we get wisdom with aging. hahahahaha

I know! If you let them go, they easily add up to a car payment over time! I may have the “set it and forget it” concept all wrong- haha!!
Amen. Thanks for reading and for adding to the conversation!
Boy, does this hit a key and familiar pain point. The Must Have category needs to be permanently affixed to my wall.
The writing life can be so simple, and we keep getting sold on stuff we don’t need and don’t understand, don’t we? :)

“Permission to ignore” accepted 🫡 Thanks for the thoughtful advice 🙏🏼
My pleasure. Do you have a tech writing tool you can't live without?

Like I said, Vince, Go write something :)
Practical and supportive, as always. Knowing what you can safely ignore is liberating
It can get overwhelming. Nice to hear from you, my friend!
