This is disturbing, Maryan. No doubt there'll be more and more cases like this. The times we live in, I suppose. An important post. Thanks for sharing.
Disturbing and critically important to any creative worker. This is not going to go away. And even with all the blather online from AI people, the situation may have negative, long-term consequences. Thanks for reading--hope you share it with writer friends!
Wow. This is soooooo important. I was surprised by how much the federal court broadened the fair use doctrine in favor of Anthropic's practices. I will look into my published legal books. Thank you, Maryan!
Writers I know are finding their books on the list. And even if we don't find our books, it might be good to register just in case Anthropic isn't telling quite the whole story. Please pass this story to anyone it might be of interest to!
This reminds me of the way gun manufacture has sometimes been treated by the courts. Just because you make a dangerous instrumentality does not make you responsible for its subsequent illegal use to harm or kill humans. In the same way, AI companies are being absolved from having to pay for the infringement almost certain to result from their having used copyrighted material to train the AI. By passing fault down the food chain, justice can only be achieved by filing a multiplicity of law suits, rather than one, at the source. Good for the industry, bad for the individual or artist who is harmed.

All of us creative workers need to watch this closely—and the rest of the cases like the NYTimes suit
It's going to be a crazy world as AI grows and evolves. Thanks for staying on top of an important subject.
